What's most important to you?
The good news is they're both good cameras. The obvious difference is that one is more compact. So the question goes back to you, what's more important?

For some people, size is all. The G2 is just big enough that you might leave it at home when you go out, or go to a party, where the S40 fits in your pocket.

On the other hand, the G2 is a landmark camera that will serve you well. The bigger size does give you better optics.

Features are otherwise very similar.

So you have to ask yourself which really matters, be honest.

I spend alot of time in Scotland where I take lots of landscape shots but I also want to produce the same quality of images for portraits or the children.

I don't like the way this is going, should I have to buy a camera for each purpose?

Both great cameras
No, you don't need 2 cameras. They are both great cameras, either one will be a joy.

The S40 has a lot of the manual controls and features that are on the G2. It lacks some of the luxuries and refinements (like antiglare LCD), and the ability to use attachments.

Due to the lens, the G2 will give you more flexibility in low light, and more exposure flexibility generally. The built-in flash is more powerful. It also gives you more ability to use lens converters, filters, etc.

You will love either camera. Since you mostly talk about picture quality in your last message, maybe you should go with the G2.

G2 or S40
There is no comparison between the two
the G2 last twice as long, the digital zoom is far superior, the vieiwfinder lines up with the picture, the S40 sucks at this.
Add the fact that you can add a ext. flash and lense converters to the G2 there really is only on choice, the G2

The G2 and the S40 are for two different types of users. For some, the S40 is much better - easier to use, cheaper, easier to carry.

So, the question is always, what does the specific user want, and what are they using it for. NOT which camera in theory takes the best pictures technically in the lab if money is no object - but which one will work best for a specific user and their budget.
