Default Photo correspondence school (NYIP) or local college

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are of the New York Institute of Photography? They have a 30 lesson course for $799 (if you pay 100% upfront, $998 if you don't) verses my local community college is about $55 per credit hour. Photo 101 is 3 credits and Photo 102 is 3 credits so, that would be about $330 (not including texts and materials).

I guess there are pros and cons to both:

NYIP:

- Study on your own time, take lessons when you want

- personal advisor assigned to you

- texts and materials

Community college:

- live interaction with professor and other students. With NYIP, you send in your shots to your professor, then they send you a critique.

Well, I think I would go with the college and save about $400, but at NYIP I get a free gear bag! Hmmm... decisions...

NYIP is a very good school albeit expensive. Check your local community college for non-credit photography classes. You may find some very good classes for relatively low cost. I have taken numerous non-credit classes from Portland Community College in Portland, OR and have learned a great deal. Many of these classes involved sharing your pictures from a photo assignment with the other students in the class and critiquing each others work, a very educational and rewarding experience.

Yes, I have been reading very good comments about NYIP. Plus I can get the free gear bag!

I'll probably go the community college route, since it will save me $$$$ I was just looking to see what other people have experienced or thought of NYIP. Thank you for the comments.
