Default photo in file problem

Ok, recently photos in my open window have this 'lovely' BIG BLUE square with >> in them. Or a Green Square with a check mark in it. I do not know what program placed them their, nor how to get rid of them!

Anyone know of this? And, more importantly, how to rid the photos of it?
I have:
PMB Picture Motion Browser...which has tried to take control, which I am not too happy with, and will delete.
PHOTO SHOP COREL not done this before...but, who knows.
CS ELEMENTS have no idea, do not know this program
HP PHOTOSMART 3.5 which has never done that before...
These are HIGHLY Disturbing and only recently showing up. No, do not know how recent....

PS it is doing it in my word documents as well. So, in a file if I view the documents as a medium icon the big green or blue squares appear...or even if it lists or in detail...the mark at the left will have the box and markings....

Do you know how to check your file associations in your operating system? (window, probably?) If so, you may find that one program or another has hijacked the file associations when you installed it. Easiest fix would be to open the program you normally use to view pictures, and find where the files are associated (usually under the file menu with a name like Preferences), and reassign the files there. It can be done in Windows Explorer, but takes more time.

One possibility would be to run windows restore to a point before this happened.
I don't really know anything about the programs or site you are using, so maybe somebody who does might jump in and offer some more pertinent suggestions.

A little googling leads me to believe that it might be a byproduct of Norton 360 to indicate backup status. This might be helpful:

Green Eyed Stranger, thank you, thank you, thank you....I looked into it and you are RIGHT! I never thought to look into 360. Only looked at the photo programs. It is called an overlay...lets one know if it is backed up or not. Must have clicked the overlays on at some point.
Thank you so much, again.

Glad to help. It's a little disconcerting when computers start doing unexpected things.
