Exactly what I would suggest. I use a Tracks collapsible hiking staff that doubles as monopod and cudgel. It telescopes and disassembles down to 20" / 0.5m, and extends to about 60" / 1.5m. As a monopod it stabilizes long teles, wedges nicely into chain-link fences, and lets me wave a time-delayed P&S out from a balcony or over a crowd.

VELBON ULTRASTICK L50 monopod, at last! has come! (from amazon.uk, excellent service). Although bulkier than my imagination wishes, I know it is the slimest in the market. I believe it is going to help a lot, when the need calls for some stability!a.
