Default OT: question for techies

I use Extensis Suitcase for font management and, when I downloaded the 9.2 version that replaced 9.0, I had to uninstall the 9.0 version after the fact. Once uninstalled, the program no longer started at bootup. So, I put a shortcut to it in the Startup folder, making sureto choose "minimized," thinking it would simply go into the tray ready to use when I needed it. This didn't work, and when I boot, Suitcase comes up fullscreen. I wrote to Extensis for help and they wrote back saying they won't support the 9.x version because they're now on 10.x, which is certainly lousy public relations and which tells me to not buy any more of their products. In the meantime, does anyone know how to get a program to start up and go directly into the tray? Or is this maybe a case of some sort of switch that's necessary and that Extensis could have easily told me about but didn't?

It would certainly accomplish the feat, but I'm very resistant to buying a program to do what Extensis could have told me how to do in one sentence or less. Stubborn, is what I am. A tad angry, too.

Nevertheless, thank you for that link. It's something I might very well end up wanting anyway.

I don't know what Extensis Suitcase is, but if you're looking for a program to manage fonts, try Font Thing by Sue Fisher. It's free and works well...

It does not minimize to the tray either, but it's a very nice free program.

Programs have to be written specifically to minimize to the system tray (unless you use some kind of tool like Phil mentioned).

You should avoid adding programs to your system tray unless you really use them a lot. You should especially avoid their use in Win9x...

Minimising to the tray means they are running in the background on your pc, taking up valuable memory and processor speed, when you most need it for editing and rendering. I know what I've got running and turn most of the background tasks off. I'm on Win98SE. VOX

Font managers don't take up much memory, and I run very little else. I do quite a bit with graphics that include lettering, which means I have a huge collection of fonts. Letting Windows load only those fonts it insists on having available keeps down a lot of the baggage.

Still, though, I'm beginning to get used to loading Suitcase only when needed. It's not really a huge hassle. I think that, mostly, I was irate at the response I got from Extensis.
