Default Setting Custum White balance? Expocap/Expodisc

I want to get ready for indoor basketball season, this year I want to set custom Whitebalance, which I did not do last year.

I know you can use a card, etc, but saw these Expodisc, which is expensive, but also saw white balance lens caps on ebay for around $5,,,,do these work?
It seems easy to put on, and I guess take a picture at the court, etc..

Opinions? suggestions

Staples Brand double-sided matte Photo Supreme Paper. ;-)

Put it in between some of the lights for a more balanced reading.

Here's an example taken with a Sony A550 using that Staples paper to set a custom white balance with. This is straight from the camera except for downsizing (no cropping, sharpening, color correction, etc.). Color is "close enough", and I prefer it's slightly warmer look to technically correct neutral WB anyway.

Sony A550, Minolta Maxxum 135mm f/2.8 AF lens at f/2.8, 1/400 second, ISO 3200.

P.S.

This one:

It's good for setting white balance since some papers are too reflective and this one is matte, and it's a brighter paper compared to some matte papers, too. I use it for prints and setting WB. :-)

Thanks,
I am using a Canon xsi, with a 85mm 1.8....would I set setting to "P", and hold out this, with auto focus. I understand the using to exposure, and the custom setting, not sure the taking of picture, exposure ? etc

I use an 18% gray lens microfiber cleaning cloth.

If you'll ever print your photos, use a sheet of the photo paper you'll print on. Some photo paper isn't exactly white, in fact many of the things we think of as white really aren't. If you use a sheet of your photo paper, even if it isn't white, it won't throw off all your other colors.

Ok, I will get a 18% grey card, but what is the process. I go to the gym where my son is playing, I take the grey card out, and ? I hold in one hand, and take a picture of it in "P" mode, focus on manuel or Auto, I fill the frame, do I lay the card on the bleacher? I need some steps, last year the pictures were yellow..some,,,so I think the custom WB will help. sorry for being an idiot on this....help

Place the gray card on a flat, horizontal surface that's under the same light source as your subject will be under, and follow the instructions on page 90, under Custom White Balance, in your camera's Instruction Manual.
