Default point & shoot + compact = equals....

I'm looking for a point and shoot camera that is compact... the smaller the better.

I currently have a Powershot A20 and I'm satisfied with it except the size. I'd like something smaller and probably with more megapixels. The 3X zoom has worked well so far so that can be equal or better if possible.

I don't really care about it shooting videos or sound.

I'm basically going to be taking pictures on family events, vacations, birthdays, etc. And developing them into 4 x 6s... Sometimes indoors, sometimes outdoors (sunny/cloudy, etc.)

Ocassionally after a trip I've blown up a pic to a larger sizes. For example I have a pic in San Fran of the family in front of the Goldent Gate that I had developed in 12 x 18 and the quality is OK. Would larger megapixel have helped?

Also I have a couple of 32 meg compact flash cards so if the Camera can use those then I probably wouldn't have to upgrade?

Anyhow THANKS and any help and suggestions is greatly appreciated!

Happy New Year!

Take a look at the Canon S400. It is reviewed here and the other popular sites. It is small, uses CF memory, is 4 MP and 3X zoom. Yes, the extra MP would help in a 12 x 18 print. For 4 x 6, you dont need much. 2 MP is fine. 32 Meg CF is pretty small. You can get a 128 - 256 for pretty cheap these days.

I would advise the same thing too

I'm going to buy the s400 over ebay in the next couple of days. There is several interesting packages that includes 128 or even 256 megs cf cards.

I dont get the Ebay thing. All the current generation cameras I see there sell for at least as much as they go for from an online store, or a decent deal at a B&M (at least in the US). I just bought one for $359 at Circuit City. It would be hard to get one for that price on EBay.

I buy there because there is a very nice package for the canon s400 and because those place you buy from over the not do not deliver to Canada. If they do, it would cost a lot.

The Toronto shop I saw on ebay sells the s400 for 650 canadian dollars and you have a brand new s400 camera and all what's in the box + the one year warranty, a 128 cf card (45 usd value) , an extra battery (40 usd value), a mini tripod (let's say 30-35 usd value) and a canon leather case (20-25 usd value)

650 can dollars = 500 us dollars by the way.

pretty good if you ask me

US prices:

128 CF $30
battery $4 (1000 mAh not Canon brand)
Mini tripod $10 (guess)
Canon leather case $10

Maybe $55 - $60 worth of extras.

a prop battery costs approx 40 bucks
and on new egg.com the cf 128 meg card costs 42 bucks..

and I saw those canon leather case for the s400 for 15-30 bucks

The problem here is that our futureshop in Canada sells that damn card for 75 Can bucks... that really sucks.

that package deal is good for me.

Dont know where the deals are up north! You guys do tend to pay higher than here in the US.

Amazon.com has the Canon Leather case for $10
$4 batteries on EBay here:
http://stores.ebay.com/everydaysource
I got a 256 Meg card at best buy for $40.
I see 128 & 256 on sale all the time at the local stores for a good price after rebate. Do some searches, I'm sure there are some good deals up there too.

I agree Olivier, that deal is very good. Most online stores and a lot of camera shops sell just the S400 for around $650(CND). The addition of the mini-tripod, extra battery, extra memory card and leather case is an awesome deal. Sjm817, the S400 uses a proprietary battery, so your $4 price on AA's is not relevant. If I didn't require a weatherproof camera, I would have bought one of those S400's instead of the Olympus Stylus 300 digital I am currently waiting for.

The $4 price is for the battery that the S400 uses, the NB-1LH. Its actually a little bigger. 1000 mAh Vs 860 of the stock Canon. I have an S400. I know what battery it uses.

Canon battery $4
