Default Software to control Cameras?

I wonder why all reviews always concentrate
so much on resolution, memory etc, but hardly
ever talk about the software interface of the camera. Digital cameras potentially offer a wide
range of functions: you could take pictures,
change settings exchange pictures and more
over the connection cable and thus completely
control a camera from a PC or laptop, if you have
the rigt program or at least an interface description.
This could be used for research, creating animations or stop-and-go movies and much
more. So are there any informations out there
that compare how well different cameras can
be controlled from a PC? Preferably a linux PC?

Most all of the new Canon cameras come with software to control them over the USB port. See this review page:

We list other software for various cameras here:

Default Thanks for the info, but still ...

This is valuable information, but I think the
availability of software, but much
more importantly -
documentation of interface protocols should be
one significant part of the evaluation of the
camera. Most software is for Windows only,
oftentimes shareware or commercial software,
and the availability of documentation from the
manufacturer would enable independend
programmers to create software for linux,
mac, PDAs or whatever other platform.
IMHO a good documentation of the communication
protocols is nearly as important as a good
user menu - it makes the camera usable.

PS: this is a great site!
