Default Buy: New Lens or New Camera

Hi, I'm using Konica Minolta Dynax 5D at the moment, i mainly use the kit lens (18-70).

I'm thinking about buying the Carl Zeiss 16-80.

I also consider buying new camera with the prices below $1000.

Which one would give me the best outcome?

Thanks

The Sony/Zeiss 16-80 is a fine lens. Another alternative is the Tamron 17-50/2.8. Do you find that you use the wide end of your 18-70 most often, or the long end? Do you shoot mostly outdoors or indoors?

The best choice for a body right now is the Sony A580, though you may want to look at the A55 or the A35. Also, the A65 might work well for you, but it's not currently available in the USA.

I think you should trade them both in on a new system. Things have moved on quite a bit.

Hi Topocalypse. You ask "which would give me the best outcome..?"
With regards what exactly...? Are you looking for a slightly wider/longer zoom or improved optical quality? Are you happy with the speed and image quality of the 5D... or not.?
What are you looking to improve on...?

My guess would be that the Zeiss lens would not give you much improvement in image quality on the 5D body - it would need a higher resolution body to be able to appreciate the improvement. A camera upgrade would probably give you the most 'bang for your buck' at this time, and be able to take better advantage of lens upgrades in the future.

I'd say that the 5D would hold back any really good lens, and that the 18-70 would hold back any really good camera.

But I was always pleased with the Tamron 17-50/2.8 on my 5D, so maybe going with the Zeiss now is a good way to spread out the cost.
