Default Need help w/ video interview project

OK, I posted in What Camera to buy but maybe I'm off track, not asking the right questions.

I need advice on video.

Specifically, I need to record interview videos of around 2 hours where the subject is seated. Thus I need external power, preferably an external mic, and a card capable of recording 2+ hours of video. The videos will be part of the archive at the Women's (Veteran's) Memorial but don't need to be archival, professional quality.

I have a Hi-8 camcorder but it won't last much longer.

I have a Canon A590 but no external power or mic capability that I know of.

What is the best way to record these videos? A camcorder? A funky laptop webcam set up? I'm a long time still photog and know very little about video, or even where to go to find answers.

Should I have posted this in the movie section?

Any help is appreciated!

Robin

Since it sounds as if you will be doing a number of these interviews, you will need quite a lot of storage. Very likely, there will need to be quite a bit of editing done - at least cutting dead spaces and digressions. I think I would go with a good laptop and external webcam (HD) and mike. This would let you record directly to the hard drive, and later edit the video without the extra steps that would be required of memory cards. Would be simpler to include biographical data in the same folder as the interview, etc.
This is assuming you have the budget for it, of course.
Good luck with the project.

How far away from the webcam can the interviewee be? I like this idea if the person doesn't have to be arm's length from the webcam (and if they do, how far does a webcam cable reach?) We've only ever had one and it had a short cable and was a pain to set up.

I'm afraid I can't help you with that, having never used one myself. Presumably, there are variations in focal lengths and cable lengths, but I haven't had the occasion to shop for one.
