Default Availability of recently announced digicams in America?

Hello,

please help a European guy who wants to get a digital camera from the U.S.

A friend of mine is travelling to the U.S. in two weeks and promised to get me one of the recently announced 8 megapixel cameras. These cams were announced a few days ago. My question is: will they be available in the U.S. in 2-3 weeks from now so that my friend can actually buy one for me? (The Sony 828 is already avaiable but I'd prefer the Nikon Coolpix 8700).

(The reason I want to have one from the U.S. is because digicams cost a whopping 50% more here in Hungary.)

Thanks for the help.

One guy on dpreview said he got his 8700 yesterday Ė didnít say from where. 3 retailers show it in stock but Iím not sure I trust two of those particular retailers. http://www.shopping.com/xPC-Nikon_Co...0e288f072e88a9

My guess is that since someone has already physically got one the big retailers will have them in stock in a couple of weeks. Plan on paying around $1000.

I advise you check B&H - they are reputable, I buy from them regularly.

Damn... "estimated availability: March". My friend is returning from the US on March 6, so the chance that he'll find one could be slim.

The guy who said he got the 8700 posted these pictures of it. http://homepage.mac.com/leefaire/cam...toAlbum58.html So it appears he actually got one. The box is in English but that doesnít tell much.

I donít know where he is from, and while dpreview has a great clientele the board itself is about 9 on a 10 scale of crappy. I canít find a search by member name to try to find out where he is from. He posted on the review of the camera itself and I canít find his info. Advanced search is supposed to allow that but it is down as usual.

Canoga says they expect to be shipping in late February, so it might not be hopeless: http://www.canogacamera.com/e/env/10...m=invnew:56054 B&H might just be conservative so they wonít have their phones ringing off the hook.

I'd hold out hope anyway. Have your friend check as many camera shops as possible. Most likely only pretty big places will have the new cameras so early, but you might get lucky checking out some of the smaller shops, as they might be willing to sell some of the cameras before thier "official" release date. Just my thoughts, anyway, good luck in your search.
