Default Autofocus won't work in Movie mode on T3i

I have a Canon EOS T3i. For some reason, it will not do an autofocus (with the shutter half-press) before I start recording a movie. This worked fine previously, but now I can only manually focus. The AF is set on the lens. The menu is set for AF Live.
If I move my dial over to the regular "Auto" for photos, it will Autofocus just fine also, so that motor clearly works. Am I missing something?
(Whenever I search for this, it's people asking about continuous autofocus in Movie mode)
Thanks for your help!
