The 70-300 is bigger, heavier, and more expensive.

The 55-250 has more vignetting.

The 55-250 is not appropriate for a 'Full Frame' body.

The 70-300 has a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4, while the 55-250 does slightly better at 1:3.

For most applications, the 55-250 is a great bargain.

hi IMHO you cant go wrong with the 55-250is and add to that a 50m f1.8 and you have a good all round selection add an external flash too

The ef 70-300 also focus fast then the 55-250. I have both, and over all on a crop body the 55-250 is good, but the 70-300 is better. That is why is is 2x the price.
