I do the same thing but there just always seems to be something that get left behind. So far only once has it cause me to miss a shoot, darn CF cards.

I learned the hard way it's not just the list, it's how I use it. Here's what works for me:
1 Print the list
2 Make a small pencil mark when an item is staged (on a bed or table top).
3 If I remove an item from the staging area, the pencil mark is erased.
4 Cross off the item when it's packed. Never remove something that's packed.

Treat essential items as if you were checking to see if a gun was loaded. Knowing, remembering, thinking, figuring, rationalizing, etc. doesn't cut it. Only the eyeball test will do.

When this system fails, it's usually because I don't follow #3. Two ways I've reduced such errors. First is to order the list so the things I might need between staging and packing are at the bottom of the list. That reminds me not to stage them until right before packing. When the cost is low I buy a duplicate so there is no need to use the staged item. I don't know how many trips I went on without a razor because I only had one handle before I gave up and bought a second handle.

I have different lists for different types of trips. I keep the old ones, revising after each trip as necessary.

Good system, it is very close to what I do for our camping list. Only I use a outline program on the iPad. Just need to expand the outline program to cover camera gear.

Traveling light, I carry a small P&S, batteries, cards, and a gorillapod.

I would add a make-up brush, the type used for adding blush to the cheeks. easy to carry and just what you need if you pick up something on your sensor...
