Default Best lens for Sony DSLR A200 for night action shots

I will be taking night action (soccer) photos from the stands this Fall. What would be the best additional lens to use with our Sony A200? Thank you!

Need longer lens for closer shots. What is the long lens alternative to the Minolta 50mm f/1.7? Thanks.

You need a long focal length to capture the action on the field from the stands, and you need a large aperture to allow you to use fast shutter speeds without risking significant image noise from using too high an ISO setting.

You might try the Sony 70-200/2.8, but it probably won't be long enough. There's the Sony 300/2.8. Sigma and Tamron also have their own versions of the 70-200/2.8.

BTW, these lenses are all available at LensRentals.com, so you can try them before you buy them.

The A200 is a fine little camera, but any ISO over 400 is to be avoided if you want excellent results. For night shots of action scenes, a camera that gives you excellent photos at ISO of 1600 or above is recommended. Any f2.8 telephoto will be very costly so upgrading to an A57 or A65 will not be a problem, I assume.

Both the A57 and A65 are history. The A57 was replaced by the A58, and the A65 was not replaced, but there is the A77 II.

I think that we lost devand. He probably checked a few prices to determine how much shooting night sporting events was going to cost and wondered "WHAT WAS I THINKING?".
Yes, I should have said A58, but I wouldn't trade my A57 for one.
