Default Life of Lithium Ion Battery?

I read that Lithium Ion battery has got limited life span, about 2-3 years. Means even if you donít use it (kept in unopened condition) still it is useless after 2-3 years. Is it correct? If yes then why the battery manufactures donít put manufacturing and expiry dates on the package? Is there any way to find out?

Regards

I buy a new Lithium Ion battery for my old Canon Pro90 (same one used in newer digicams and even some newer camcorders). They are fairly inexpensive. I still have the original one and it works OK. Take a look at Battery Barn for inexpensive replacements.

Total cost depends on how often you use the camera.

This is apparently true for the Lithium Ion chemistry employed today; but advaces in Li-ion battery chemistry/manufacturing technology are almost exponential. By the time the Li-ion bat you buy today reaches its end of life the replacement technology most likely will have significantly different (and better) characteristics.

Well, my sony "infoLithium" battery I have here, [ which is Lithium Ion ]

From my deciphering of all the funny numbers on the back, this battery was either made in 2002, or 1998... either way it came with my 'DSC-D770' which is fairly 'old' in terms of the digital world, it was released in 1999 after the dsc-d700 in 1998. soooo.... dont know if that makes a difference... besides the fact that it obviously works and works good because it lasts me an awful long time.
