Default Question: 3x Optical zoom really exists?

We've already known that, in digital cameras, digital zooming is nothing more than cropping a picture in Photoshop and losing the Quality.

What I'm wondering.. 3x zoom in digital cameras are never bringing the object you are looking at closer. Well, in fact the object you are zooming becomes same size as you see naked eye but in a smaller angle of view. The object is not getting bigger in size, so how can we call this as "Zoom"? In this circumstance, 3x zoom is only a feature, which turns Telewide view of the camera, to a real life sized view in a limited angle.

Can someone tell me why? :?:

I think you are misunderstanding what "3X zoom" means. It does NOT mean that it brings the object 3 times closer, or that it makes it 3 times bigger. the "3x" just refers to the ratio between the wide angle focal length and the telephoto focal length with that particular lens--and that's the important part.

You have to know what the focal length is. A lens with a focal length of 35-105mm is a 3x zoom. A lens with a focal length of 100-300mm is ALSO a 3x zoom, but the two are VERY different in portraying the subject.

To put it simply, the "3X Zoom" that manufacturers stamp on their ads are pretty meaningless. What's more important is the focal length range of the lens.

For the non-photographer the 3X Zoom stamp is easier to understand than 35-105 mm.
