Sometimes 3mp is around 2000x1500 so at 8x10 you end up at around 185 ppi.

4mp is around 2300x1700 so you end up at 210 ppi.

What this works out to is in some images you can tell the difference.

If you are printing borderless 8x10 or want perfect square borders then you will be cropping some of the picture and the ppi numbers may lower even more.

If you want to consistantly print at 8x10 and want to be critical .. yes. For occasional 8x10's (just for those special pictures) no. If you crop a lot or want to pick up a corner spot you may want to go even higher.

---------------------
FYI Most of the inkjets run between 240 and 260ppi. 6 colors simulates 280+ppi for some colors. The new 8 color will probably approach 280+ ppi for all prints.

Dye Subs run 300ppi+ (or a little better)

FYI 6.4MP = about 3000x2400 = 300dpi pretty close to the best quality 8x10.

I am assuming you want to do a minimum amount of post processing...

the more megapixels you have, the more you can crop your photos before printing, so if you are the type to play around with the composition in photoshop, then get 4mp, if you print as is, don't spend the extra money, stay with 3mp
