The "D" version adds a chip in the lens, that allows the camera to factor distance into its calculations. But why the 80-200mm, why not go a bit further and get the 70-200mm f.2.8. This lens has i.e. the VR system, that allows yout to shoot at 200mm with 1/60s shutter speed. Some has even gone lower...

Once tried, you cant live without it!!!

bradg.. I use this lens all the time and it is awsome, i am not sold on the VR since i use a monopod, tripod, most of the time...JMHO.. Over 25,000 shots with this lens and still going strong.. When you use it ,mount the monopod, tripod to the lens, not the camera.. good Luck...

I agree - the 80-200 is an awesome lens too. You'll love it.

I don't think you will notice the "D". I didn't. (sales argument ???)
