Default Macro with flash-- for a dentist

Hi-- I have searched the site and have a few ideas, but still have a few questions...

I am buying a digital camera for my girlfriend, who is a dentist. She'd also like to use it recreationally. I have initially purchased a Powershot S1 IS, but was wondering if I should go with something else?

My options seem to be what I have + an SRelectronics ring flash, or perhaps swapping it for a G5 + the MR-14EX. Can anyone with experience in either please comment?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The G5 with the Canon macro flash will be a much better way to go as it will operate in auto TTL for exposure. The SR Electronics ring flash would require the camera to be used in aperture mode with a fixed aperture value. The G5 + Canon macro flash is an intelligent setup with fully automatic exposure control.
