Default CCD sizes

Hi,
readind several reviews i see that the size of the CCD in camera's is sometimes given as 23.7 by 15.6 mm and sometimes just as a 2/3" ccd. Can anyone explain to me what the 2/3 (or 3/8 or whatever) size means.
Q2. is there a place where i can read more about CCD's in general, what is noise, what is colordepth etc.
Thanks in advance
Charles

Maybe this will help put it into perspective. The CCD imager in the center is the size (1/1.8") used in most 3, 4 and 5 megapixel consumer cameras.
