Default Is it wise?

I have noticed that many people post a list of their principal equipment as part of their signature. I would think this would be an open invitation to theft. In the various photo display forums, some people have thousands of dollars of equipment listed.

At Christmas time, they say you should not put piles of empty boxes advertising in big print and pictures what was in them, in front of your house for the trash collector or recycling truck to pickup. It is a blatent advertisement of some of the new toys in your household.

I think the same applies to listing your equipment online. It's like saying "come on over and help yourselves"

Think about it...

Steve, if there is a better place for this posting, feel free to move it if the forum software allows it.

I don't think thefts will come to your house, just because you list your equipement in a forum.

Even if they wanted to:
They have to know your adress.

On the other hand I think it is helpful to list your equipement, because I often ask myself "How did he do that shot? Which cam did he use?"

In that case his signature answers my question and I don't have to ask back.

Perhaps if you didn't list your full name, town, and state of residence in your sig this wouldn't be such a concern.

I agree - I have all my stuff listed but how do you know where I am? All my signature says is Mesa, Arizona. If you want to search all 450,000 residents of Mesa until you find me then try to find my equipment (that is not at my house) you'll be busy for a while.

LTBerry, I don't think it would be inaccurate to say that if someone wanted to find you, they could have your address with about ten minutes worth of searching. Nothing is sacred or private anymore.

Do you know this person?

Hi Cal...

Respectfully, I do not think this is a concern.

Just remember...anything you post on the web can be read by:

Anyone Anytime Anywhere

(unless you delete the information! But, even
then...once posted, once extracted...it is "out there").

Yes it is
I suppose you are going to tell me my address now.
Any guesses where I keep my equipment?

The point is not to attack you but to show how easy it is to find personal information on the internet.
