How come my first 56 K modem was lightning fast back in 1997?

I remember when 9600 baud was considered fast! I guess that dates me! The first modem I ever used was a 300 baud acoustic coupled. You dialed the number and when you got a carrier, you placed the handset on the cradle on top of the modem. That was about 25 years ago.

Oh, I remember them !

I have to lookback at the movie War Games (1983) where this kind of modem was used by a boy who "found a back door into a military central computer possibly starting World War III". :-)

Yes, should be funny looking at it after 21 tech years have gone by !

Unfortunately there are still many places in the US that do not have cable modems or DSL.

There are also many towns in (mostly) rual states that have shared line system for their town phone (I know all too well, as 1/2 the town I used to live in was that way.) In those cases you only get around 24000 baud no matter what type of modem you use nor who you are calling.

My solution? surf without graphics turned on. Then I'd right click on a picture and select "display picture" (or whatever that menu item was) when the picture mattered to me.

So don't go calling 56k the dark ages... I bet its not that uncommon, actually.

Personally, I've had flash animation turned off for over a year now and I don't miss it. I get the cute graphic without the animation.

There is nothing wrong with a 56k.

I only wish I could get 56Kbps - I never see anything faster than 26.4Kbps. One of the joys of living in the country, along with waiting a couple of days for the township to plow our quarter mile driveway when there is to much for me to handle with my little tractor. Well worth it.
