Okay, so I've been looking at digital cameras for about 2 months now.

I just sold my fuji finepix 2800 I bought about 2 summers ago. (2.0mp 6x optical)

The image size wasnt the best (only 1600x1200), but I got extremely good quality out of it with VERY little noise in my pictures.

I had been thinking of cameras in the <$350 range, but after a lot of looking there wasnt anything decent for that cheap. (the s5000 quality was horrid)

So I stepped up my price range a bit.. and I have narrowed it down to the dimage z2 and the powershot s1.

The z2 prices seem to me like they dramaticly dropped, but I might be just me.

Ive thoroughly read the reviews here.. and at a few other places.

What I take pictures of:
Lots of macro shots
Action shots
Portraits
Short videos

What I need:
Manual options
Good macro
at least 6x optical zoom
VERY little noise; good quality

What I use it for:
Prints
Photo editing on my computer

I would openly get the canon, but its about $100 more, and it doesnt have the 800x600 movies which I reall look forward to shooting with thw z2.

But Its a complete tossup between these two, because I know the canon will go down in price eventually because its really new right now.

Can someone possibly post a short 800x600 video from the z2?

thanks
-andrew

I noticed in your first post that you wanted a camera for sports and macro amongst other things. From what i've read the Z2 is supposed to have a fast auto focus and a super macro mode plus on Amazon UKthe Z2 is £130 cheaper than the Canon. I think if i had the money i'd get a Z2. :-)

well thats one thing I read about it, which put it ahead of the canon in macro/action shots, but the image quality doesnt look as good..

I was tempted with the Minolta, too, but I wanted a swivel screen, and I already have a fairly large amount of CF memory, and the idea of being able to get 4GB for $200 greatly appeals to me. I got an S1 and for the money and what I've been using it for I've been fairly happy with it so far (although there is room for improvement)

oh god.

that macro is utterly awesome.

-----------------

other hand; yeah the swivel screen is a MAJOR plus for self portraits and such.. and I like being able to rotate the screen when theres a glare in the room or something like that.

but it doesnt have macro; the closest focal is 10cm, the z2 can get like 3cm.

--------------------

right now im leaning towards thez2 for a few reasons.

4mp.

good macro.

800x600 movies.

cheaper.
