Many of those lenses have IS (Image Stabilization) built in. Another reason for them being so large is to let more light into the camera...zoom lenses eat light (the more you zoom the less light enters the camera) so this compensates for this.

yea mike, those lenses are fast, most 1:2.8

they also put GIANT lens shades on them

Where did you see them renting those lense at that price? I know a place that rents Canon 600 f4 IS lenses for $400 a day. So $175 would be a steal. Heck, I'd consider doing it just to try one. Can you imagine 1200mm??? Wow.

ia photog i know bought one of those for bball(lots of $$) and he says its way too slow(af speed, not apature)...

You're right about looking at the cameras during the matches. I do do that. When I'm watching I wonder what focal length the TV camera is using and such. And when I look at pictures in a magazines I do the same.
