NHL

just to let you know i have a pretty simple set up using a 1gig p3 running XP pro. its just all the peripheral junk that increases the critical mass on it. the only "trick" item is the cpu cooler which is Cu. the mobo is kind of tight fit for somethings. th oem fan hit other compontents. this was smaller and quieter. temp controlled.

Steves- sorry about getting back a little late. if your going to drive 2 monitors the 64MB card is more than adequate. advise at least a geforce 4 mx 440 64MB. it will keep you happy especially at about $70 now rather than $250.

as to the differences between XP and XP pro

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...workathome.asp

in addition to this there are some more subtle things that may not make any difference to you.

I would strongly recommend Pro. The OSs are identicxal but $%MS has castrated some features on Home and provides less support when you call.

I am ending up with a 1gig machine, P4 2.4 120gb HD DVDR+RW front panel 4 USB, audio, CF reader,

BTW ... smart shopping has brought the price, w 3 yr warranty, down to about 1600!

The 120 mb is mainly for Pshop. I save intermidiate Pshop edits and that eats disk space!

Any advikce on OS backup? I am trying GoBack and ti seems OK so far.

just remember to partition it. my machine is 42gig on the combined drives. still have yet to fill it. remember the 1 big rule- if it is valuble don't keep it on the HD. i really doubt you'll use all that space. unless of couse your a closet gamer.

enjoy

goback is rather redundant to the built in restore on XP though a bit more robust and more feature laden.

a disk image made with either Ghost or Drive Image(my preference) after getting it nice and settled would be very good.

ok if you are looking at a dell then on the second page of their site at the top it says refurbished clik there. I bought 3 refurbs now and have never had a aproblem with any one of them and you save hundreds. They change every day so write down what you want and look each day till you find the one you want.

Steves

Roxio's GoBack is the bare minimum on any system! BTW in come free with Norton System Work which is also a must for any PC!

If you're broadband enabled you might as well pick up their personal firewall as well...

Systemworks will be disappearing from the symantec catalog soon. they are evolving into a computer security only company.
