Hi, I'd like to purchase a new camera for taking pictures of the kids' soccer games. Small size, big zoom and fast shutter speed are what's important to me, therefore I've settled on the Canon S1. Before I purchase this, does anyone know of a better choice for me? Thanks a lot for your help!

Hi ,got the S1 and had some great results on kids sports .Just use cont focus and shooting mode usually rather than sport mode as in bright conditions outdoors Iprefer to shoot 1/3 stop under and increase brightness in image editor rather than risk blowing high lights out.The only other camera I would consider might be the Minolta Z3 but I suspect it will be more expensive in the short term as S1 prices already dropping and I have not seen any reviews yet.Only reason I did not list OLY 770 is max shutter speed is only 1/1000th sec and lacks IS but it was my second choice (also $100 Aus more expensive)

Brendon

Can you please re-explain your settings for sports shot using rapid fire.

I also have an S1 and I have only used it through little league season. I would take 10X shots in sports mode using rapid fire and i only got so so results. It seems like the auto focus doesn't refocus for each shot.

My grip The LCD freezes with each shot making it had to follow the subject.

When I tried manual with a fast shutter say 1/1000 the picture got dark

Hi Please check folowing setting.Turn camera on in shooting mode.push menu button,Under red camera icon scroll down to AF and select continuous if not already selected. The camera will then adjust focus regardless of shutterbutton being half depressed. You still need to prefocus if possible as the focus struggles if you rapidly go from wide to tele(normal for long zoom P&s cameras). As this is not a SLR camera the focus is not as quick as the camera is reading contrast off the imaging chip rather than a dedicated focus sensor reading off the mirror.I would shoot 200-300 frames in one game and would get 50% sharp and 30 0r 40 good pictures(composition etc).

Do you use any sharpening Filters in your image browser?

Hope this helps,Brendon
