Hi, I am a Korean who resides in the US. Currently, I'm in Korea after my Europe trip. The problem is that I got robbed during my Europe trip and lost my camera. Since I need a digital camera right now, I'm planning to buy nikon d70 in Korea with lenses. However, I'm afraid that this purchase will not grant me with warrant valid in the US. Is it true? If it is, is it possible to pay a little more to receive the support from Nikon USA or should I ship it to Nikon Korea? I heard somewhere that if I can prove that I bought the camera aboard I can get US warranty still. Asap response will be appreciated. Thank you.

You're right. If you buy a camera outside of the US, it does not come with the US warranty. Some stores will, for an extra fee, include the US warranty, but you would have to check with the store. Is it possible for you to order it online, because a lot of online stores offer the US warranty with the camera?

Many companies are now offering world warranties (I know Olympus as of April 2004 has a world warranty). I can't say anything about Nikon.

I don't understand though why you want to buy in Korea if you are living in the US (many times I've heard US prices are cheapest), unless you want Korean documentation/menus.

I checked with Nikon USA and they said, "We do not offer warranties on non U.S. products."

This could be wrong (you'd need to check with Nikon to be sure). However, I've been told that Nikon USA will not even service a non-USA camera outside of warranty, even if you want to pay for the service.

This is probably done to discourage import of "gray market" cameras (cameras not intended for sale in the U.S.).
