Does anyone know whether cameras bought in Japan will still have English menus available? I want to get the Canon S60, but it costs a ludicrous $570 here in the UK, and a friend is going to Japan, so I might get him to see if it's any cheaper there. How are their prices?

Thanks.

Well, a friend of mine bought a Canon camera while in Japan (can't remembe which model now), and the menu system in it was in Japanese. He assumed there was a language function somewhere in there, but couldn't find it in the manual (it too, was only printed in Japanese).

He called Canon USA and had to try twice as the first rep didn't want to help him since this was purchased out of this country, and not under the USA warranty. The second rep was a little more helpful, but his particular model did NOT have other language setups in it. He was stuck using the Japanese menu. Apparently according to that rep at least, "some" models have a choice of languages in the menu, especially if it's a model that's sold in other countries as well. His model was a "Japanese-only" model, so no choices.

The moral of the story: Sometimes saving a few dollars (or pounds in your case) may not be worth the hassle. You could of course, call Canon UK and see if they'll tell you if the model in question if bought in Japan will have international language menu choices.

Ask your friend to ask the shop seller when he's in japan if there is an english function. They will be more than happy to help you out :-)Tell him to visit Akihabara if he/she can, since the whole city is filled with high tech gadgets, including cameras and you save heaps of $$$
