Hello Everyone!

I am trying to obtain credentials for an upcoming 'music festival' that is held for 3 days annually in a town nearby. I called the individual responsible for credentialling photographers on two seperate occasions.

During my first telephone conversation with her I explained the nature of http://www.ConcertShooter.com, that I was the EditorOwner and gave her url for the website. I asked her to take a few minutes and browse the various sections and especially the many Gallery albums including my own.

She called a couple of days after my second call. I ASKED HER IF SHE HAD VISITED CONCERTSHOOTER.COM AND SHE SAID SHE HAD NOT! I was told, "We really only recognize [local paper, name omitted] and [a recent startup alternative paper, name omitted] and people working for those outlets." This town and those who sponsor such events are well known for shutting out all but the local 'approved' media.

Their website states:

"Credentials

Media credentials for [name omitted] are available only to reporters and photographers working on assignment for a newspaper, radio or television station, or NETWORK. All freelancers must be on assignment.

... To request media credentials, outlets should send a request on official letterhead, signed by an editor or news director and a copy of the publication, if applicable, to:

... Your request should be received prior to the close of business on Friday, September 24, 2004. Please also indicate if you are willing to provide tear sheets of your coverage following this year's event"

http://www.ConcertShooter.com is not only a "network" but a media outlet for some of the best concert photographers in the world. We currently have 102 photographer members and are adding anywhere from 2-3 daily to our membership.

As the Editor of http://www.ConcertShooter.com I feel I have every right to obtain the same credentials and privileges that the photographers employeed by the local rags are afforded. You cannot imagine how frustrating having to deal with this small-town, small-mindedness of these people especially since my domain is dedicated specifically to concert photography.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice as to how I can obtain credentials like any other professional photographer in the same situation? I don't want to have to go to court which is what it might take in this town to get these people's thinking straight.
Anyone else encounter a similar situation? How did you deal with it?

Thanks in advance for your assistance in this matter.

Best regards,

Tony B.

MikeFellh is correct,

WebSites do not seem to count as a media outlet unless they are backed by real hardcopy. It is not just your small town.

I guess the world has not caught up with web only distribution, but then again it might be because anyonecanget web hosting for next to nothing a month. Set up a site and try to get press passes.

Hum sounds like the old IFPO:-). They used to sell press credentials and they worked to get you into venues that anyone who asked could get into. :-).

HA just checked, I think they are still around IFPO

Impressive site, hay is ConcertShooter associated with SportsShooter in any way?? :|
