Default Megapixels and Enlarging Photos?

Hi all, I'm a newbie and was wondering if anyone can tell me with a 5.0 megapixel digital camera, what is the largest that I can enlarge a photo? And the same with a 6.2 megapixel camera also? Thanks, Scott

Well I have no problem making 13x19" from 5 megapixel images and I've had some D100 and D60 shots printed as large as 16x20"

Regardless of what some say, you can usually get a decent inkjet print from 150dpi. It doesn't matter whether you are making a large print from the full file, or a smaller print from a cropped image.

Being really practical, it's not so much about megapixels as how big a file you are prepared to push to the printer, at a chosen resolution/colour depth, output size, how much memory processing power in your pc, how long you are prepared to wait, and at the end of it all, get a misfired jet line near the end and have to do it again!

Most printers use 'dither' so resolution out the cam will get 'smoothed' anyway. Interpolation may be used in the printer to increase apparent resolution. This is a clever trick, but then it's not native cam pixels you'll be printing. As the previous post suggested, 150 or even 300 dpi is pretty memory/processing hungry for 13 x 19. To be fair, you should look at the print a bit further away.

If you like the result, and less pixels out the cam might be ok if your printer is the limiting device - then stick with what you find acceptable.
