Hello,

I've seen somewhere that you can calculate the DOF by a simple formula for all Nikon lenses. Could someone kindly post this.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Here's an online DOF calculator (that you can also download for Windows and Plam):

http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

Note, the DOF depends on the camera and the size of its CCD...some lenses can be used for both digital and film, and the same lens will have different calculations on different cameras depending on the size of the CCD or film plane.

On that page there's also a link to a circle of confusion calculator if your camera isn't listed.

A key phrase in that calculator is "acceptable sharpness" - something that depends on the size of the final print, the eye of the beholder, subject matter, ... Some of that is contained in the circle of confusion, but not all.

Thanks Mike. This is a big help. Do you recall a simple equation for DOFwith the lens focal length in mm, apature size F and a constant that was good for all Nikon lenses?

Best Regards,

Mike
