The "better" one is the one you have lenses for :-)

Seriously, they are both excellent instruments. In my own experience, the Nikon has slightly better autofocus under difficult conditions and the Canon has slightly better image quality.

Either would make an excellent choice - but what you are really buying is a lens system. Choose the lens system which best fits your personal need, then choose the body to correspond.

With the Canon, you are pretty well stuck with Canon camera bodies. With the Nikon, you can use Nikon, Kodak or Fuji dSLR's. Canon probably has an edge in lens selection and has some pretty impressive stabilized lenses.

Keep in mind that in the next few years there are going to be some incredible cameras. The new EOS-1Ds Canon 11.1 megapixel and Kodak DCS-14n 13.8 megapixel units are very impressive. You may want to consider what you might be using down the road before making your present choice.
