I agree that you might well want to rename the pictures, I just suggest doing so after saving them to CD with their original names. IrfanView's batch rename can be used to change the names from:
00001
00002
... next set, same day
00001
00002
to (include the date in file name)
yymmdda00001
yymmdda00002
...
yymmddb00001
yymmddb00002

That way sorting by file name will put them into chronological order. And the date in the name will lead you to the CD back-up. And all of the files will have unique names.

The truly paranoid, i.e., anyone who has had disk failure, will then make another back-up with the new names. On a different brand of CD - could be a bad batch on on that spindle.

Having moved data from audio tape to 5.25 inch disks to 3.5 inch disks to CD-ROMS (DVD to come) and through a few different OSs, I simply don't trust that any indexing software will survive those changes so I like a simple shooter's diary. I might well try one of the indexing systems, but I won't stop the ASCII diary.
