What's the best way to get a high figure of merit (preferably especially at wide angle so you don't have to point your camera right at the subject you're shooting), low noise, large depth of field, and a fast shutter speed, in low light, in a small (pocketable, for example) package?

Sounds like a variation on the old "how do you get 6 elephants in a VW" joke.

...well it's all relative, isn't it. [best, high, wide, low, fast...]

I have a Sony U20; but other cyber Ux cams answer to the same call...

* Noise: 2M pix wi virtually no noise when printing to a size consistent with at 2 Mpix cam (up to 5"x7" no worries; 8"x10" with proper exposure and careful PP).

* DOF: fixed focal length lens 5mm (native) -- just point -n- shoot DOF is like from your nose to oo.

* Pocketable: smaller than the average cell phone. {of course it all depnds on the size of your pockets}

The bottom line is that I keep the U20 with me like my car keys. It is always handy, asks little in return (just an occasional recharge of the two AAA bats). For candids, it's great; just slip it from your pocket and point in the gereral direciton of the suject, and you have your shot. --good thing too, cuz the tiny 1" LCD along with my poor eyes, couldn't do much better by trying.
