Just to address one point that stood out to me, the Dimage seems to allow much more manual control.

OK, two points. The Dimage viewfinder shows the exact exposure that the photo will have. I'm not aware of any other camera that does that.

Certainly both good products and each will be better suited to some uses than the other.

See my pros & cons over here. You can't loose either way since they are both excellent cameras. The 5700 will have to be priced slighly higher than the 5000 (or the 5000's price has to drop) is more suited for ease of use and geared for people fancying long lens and LCD type video shooting mode. The D7i is for people more familiar with SLR type of control, and enjoy all the fancy features that some other may find overly complicated... The D7i has a more desirable 28mm wide angle for tight quarter, but some people rather have the Nikon boasting x8 zoom for candid shots...

Then there's the cheap NiMh rechargeable AA battery that the D7i uses over the more expensive and weaker proprietary EN-EL1 that the 5700 uses, but if one doesn't plan on getting the microdrive, who care since it makes the camera smaller and lighter? (until of-course the MB-E5700 six batteries grip is added)

Of course one is black, and the other is silver, and people may find one color more attractive than the other (or more professional than the other), but beauty is only skin deep...

I think the 5700 is a prettier camera than the D7 but my vote is with HNL. I am envious of the NIkon's swivel LCD and like that Nikon included at least an ISO hot shoe if not a PC connection but the D7 is still the winner in my book.

I have to give Nikon credit for design: I don't know which one was first, Agfa or Nikon but the swivel 1680/990 bodies won my heart twice! it's just too bad they had to 'screw' up by using that silly EN-EL1 (BTW the CP990 had it share of power hog blame) and the 1/2 plastic housing on the 995... and keep on using this lamentable power source for all of their new 'prosumer' cameras when the rechargeable NiMh AA has made so much progress in both power and cost in the mean time. Three of my cameras now use the same batteries, and except for the Agfa, they also uses the same CF flash.

If any manufacturer want to get smart, they better jump on the AA powered bandwagon (for microdrive compatiblity) and CF flash, or always end up with something like an Infolithium and the deplorable MemoryStick. Can you imagine a 6+ megapixels camera on 128Mb diet? No wonder they make CDRw drive camera (that is you have to set it still for the formatting and closing sessions) Ha Ha ...
