Default Lighting whats best for outside

Just wondering if taking pics outside , if having the sun over head or behind you is better. Seems like sometimes when its behind or above it looks a little too bright , i try to keep it behind me the most . just a rookie asking a few tips from you all.

Keeping it behind you will avoid lens flare caused by air-to-glass interfaces inside a multi-element lens, and improve contrast. Using a lens hood will also assist this.
