Olympus C4040 has a great optics system that works well for low light shooting.

Has Olympus added a standard download interface yet to their newer cameras?

Last time we tested one of their cameras it didn't support WIA (WindowsXP), USB Mass Storage, or TWAIN.

The only way to access it was with software using a proprietary interface that was not available in most packages.

I hope this has changed.

Well, these days the Oly cameras act like an external drive/card reader...I just use Windows Explorer to copy/move the files. Who wants to bother with that TWAIN nonsense. You can use their Camedia program, but I don't bother.

Ok great. I thought it was as recently as the Olympus 3030 that only Camedia could be used.

When you use explorer, does it show up as a camera icon or a drive letter?

If it's a camera icon then it supports the WIA protocol, if it's a drive letter then it's using USB mass storage.

Some like Kodak use the former, and some like Sony only use the latter.

My Oly C-700UZ appears as a drive letter (I on my system, probably due to all my other drives and partitions, on a system with just hard drive and CD (C and D) the camera would probably appear as E).

I do know that the C-2100 still requires Camedia.

The Oly C4040 shows up as a removable drive. My C3000 did not and you had to use the Camedia software to download the pics. Olympus woke up and their standard on new cameras is for the camera to be seen as a drive. I understand that with the C5050 you need to desiginate the primary media card for that media to be displayed as the drive letter. The C5050 takes three different media formats that can be loaded at one time.
