I'm interested in taking some moon and star shots and I currently have the
Canon S2 IS and need to purchase some additional filters and lenses. I'm
looking at the Raynox 2.2x lens, but some seem opposed to it. What would
the experienced recommend I purchase and who are the reputable online
retailers. I'll be purchasing a tripod over the weekend, that should help.

I purchase new equipment from B&H, used equipment from KEH. The one filter that I would recommend is a CIRCULAR polarizer. Photos of the moon are done easiest in manual mode and require the same exposure as a bright sunny day e.g. 1/125 second at F16 with the ISO set at 100.

Yes, a tripod would be helpful, but also a wireless remote would be helpful. I use an S1 IS with a 1.6x teleconverter. Use the M mode. The camera gives you a good preview of the shot in that mode. Here's one of my recent efforts:

I took this shot on May 20th using a Canon S1 IS. I used Manual mode and shot a 1/125th at f8.0, ISO 100. Used the full 10X zoom, and had a 1.6X teleconverter for an effective 16X zoom. Manual focus set just below infinity. Had the camera on a tripod and used the remote to prevent shakes (I had the IS turned off). Did a little bit of sharpening and croppingwith Photoshop Elements.
