Default awesome lens

 has anyone seen this:
F2.8, 12X optical zoom lens (Leica DC-VARIO ELMARIT), with optical image stabilization. By the way, F2.8 is the maximum aperture for the entire zoom range! This lens is equivalent to 35 - 420 mm.

This is the spec for the new panasonic digicam: too bad for the 2 megapixels, but the lens!!!

FYI

Don't forget that if you zoom in at 420mm, or even use the camera with something like the Oly B-300 as a 1.7X extender, you can fill that 2MP frame with your subject. Compare that with a 5MP camera with a 100 or 115mm equivalent lens. You would have to crop to about 1/4th or 1/5th of the frame to get the same shot.

With the image stabilization and excellent optics, 2 MP can be interpolated by several techniques including Genuine Fractals, and you can still produce excellent 11x14 prints, if not larger.

The Panasonic 12x with IS and Leica lens is the DMC-FZ1:

Impressive lens, but I see some chromatic aberrations at full zoom (at full wide it's almost unnoticeable). It's not that bad, but something I noticed:

Humm, the samples on some sites have a weird image look to them, some sort of noise reduction perhaps? But it degrades the fine detail, like the eyelashes and hair of the model in the following samples page:

i wonder if the noise is ccd and algorithm related rather than lens.
Still, for such a zoom to be so fast, something must give...
Walter youre correct on the rez VS cropping comment. I just thought that this lens would be a great combo with a larger ccd; or maybe that is one of the limits to it....

You'll find the press release and specs here for the Lumix FZ1:

We should have one soon for review if they ever fill the order.

I like this one, although it looks a bit ugly IMO 8)
Do you know if it has some kind of flash sync terminal ?
Waiting for the review ...

Why would a company have such a great lens and combine it with
a 2 megapixel chip in this day and age, or maybe I should say this quarter? Product death wish? or innovation? Maybe the CEO want to be retired early?

Jim, if your implication is that everyone needs greater than 2MP resolution, I strongly disagree! If you don't need to print anything larger than an occasional 8x10, a 2MP camera will provide sharp and clear images. The combination of a long zoom with a lower megapixel camera makes it superior to a 3 or 4MP camera with a 3x zoom. Further, there aren't any current choices out there for a long stabilized zoom, which many of us would pay good money for. The 12x zoom is the longest optical zoom I have seen. I haven't seen comparison pics yet, but were it available when I bought my UZI, I certainly would have considered it! Let's wait and see what the market will bear.
