Default Color Smear off To Right on Bright Colors Outdoor on Shots

My Nikon Coolpix 2500 shows bright orange smear off toward right.
I was taking a picture of my son with an bright orange hat on and it was sunny, camera was set on auto "landscape" mode, the picture seems a little overexposed.
When I zoom in on his hat, I can see that some "orange" has blended in to the trees in the background.
The background was bare trees and some houses, I have seen this happen on some white objects also taken outside, like a white mailbox againsed a darker background like a evergreen tree, the "white" seems to look like a halo around the mailbox.
Is this an overexposure problem or the camera?

Without seeing a picture it's like saying, "My car is making a funny noise...what's wrong with it?"

Guys I would be happy to post a picture, but I do not have a web page.
Phil, I will try to send you a photo, because of my very slow line connection, I will save it at 50%.
Thanks, guys a picture is worth a 1000 words.
Bill

PS, Phil I sent the email from the email button on this forum, but it has no place to attatch a photo nor does it show your email address.

When you look at the photo with extreme magnification, is the color "smear" into squares eight pixels on a side? If so, it is due to JPEG compression.

If/when you post those pictures, post a high-resolution, low-compression image, keeping the size down by cropping it to the relevant area. You don't want to introduce further artifacts by downsizing and/or compressing.

Bill, No the colors are not into squares, you can see the haze even without zooming in on the picture.
I sent phil Gibson the two photos and if it is ok with him, perhaps he can email them to you.
I tried to set up with "Pbase", can't figure that site out, one picture shows, the other is not there, I used to use Photopoint, they were very easy to use.
What do you expect from a hillbilly!...
