Default AC Power Supply

I'm new to the digital camera world (just purchased a Canon A40). The manual makes several references about connecting the camera to AC power when uploading/downloading, etc. Other than battery drainage, are there any other reasons this seems to be so critical, as Canon seems to imply?

Regarding AC power supply, are there any generic or after-market AC power supply units for this camera or is it a Canon-exclusive accessory?

And last, pros/cons of cardreaders vs. camera direct-connect to computer. Recommendations on a decent cardreader.

I would appreciate feedback.

The only reason for the AC adapter is to save batteries when downloading from the camera to pc.

Your camera has a usb connection to down load files and you will not see an increase in speed if you switched to a card reader.

The main advantage of the card reader is convinence. You do not have to locate the camera usb cable, hook it to the camera, turn on the camera then down load the pics. Remove the media and and insert it in the card reader. I leave my card reader connected all the time.

My card read is not the best but it works well:

Thanks for the info. Do you know if the AC power supply for the A40 is a Canon-only product or are there generic models available (hopefully less than the $65 Canon wants for theirs)?

Also, are there any problems connecting the cardreader to a hub vs. directly to the computer?

Try this link for an AC adapter for your A40

I have mine connected to a usb hub now and have no problems.

I use a third party AC adaptor , no problem.
I don't use the USB cable anymore, the cardreader is so convenient as Gibson said.
