Wildman's right on the lenses...go with the 17-85. The double benefit here is she can decide later if she gets super serious which fixed length lens she would want. The second benefit is now you won't have to rack your brains over what to get her for Christmas or her birthday for the next few years. If all she's used to is a point and shoot type camera, the DSLR will keep her occupied for quite some time learning new ropes.
