You probably aren't going to find anyone who's got both the Minolta and the Olympus cameras you are interested in, so you probably won't get a comprehensive side-by-side comparisons... I don't know anything about the Minolta camera, but the C-4000, which I do have, is an excellent camera. Chock full of manual features as well as point-and-shoot capabilities. You can check out my PBase galleries (see link in the signature section below) for sample pictures.

Default compact flash vs. smart media

Is one or the other better? From what I've seen, I like both cameras and I can get them for about the same price. One of them is compact flash and the other is smart media. Pros/Cons anyone?

I've just had a good look at the Minolta - seems ok and has 4x optical not 3x.

Assuming the pics are ok (download and see) I think both will be good buys.

The Minolta uses CF1 not 2 so I wouldn't be too concerned about which card is best.

I'd still go for the Olympus because it's well proven here.

OK, based on Minolta's press release for the S414, here are some differences:

- slightly wider angle on the C-4000 (32mm vs. 35mm)
- slightly faster lens on the C-4000 (f/2.8 vs f/3.0)
- far superior macro function on the C-4000 (2cm vs. 10 cm)
- C-4000 has "slow flash" function, which can be surprisingly useful
- S414 has remote capability, which can be a big plus (you have to buy the remote separately, though); C-4000 does not have a remote sensor
- S414 has audio with its movie recording mode
- S414 can record voice memos with still pictures
- more flexible contrast/sharpness settings on the C-4000 (10 steps on each vs. 3 on S414)
- greater digital zoom on the C-4000 (3x) vs. S414 (2.2x)--but who really cares about digital zoom???
- C-4000 has 10-step adjustable Saturation, and S414 has 3-step "filter" function ("cool, normal, warm")
- no Shutter Priority on S414 (C-4000 has it)
- C-4000 has 41mm thread for external lenses/filters (need 41/43mm lens mount); don't know about the S414
- THIS IS A BIGGIE: C-4000 has four customizable My Modes--in effect, you can program your favorite settings (including aperture, manual/auto focus, zoom, contrast/sharpness/saturation, macro, etc., etc.) into easily accessible mode so that you can access them quickly and easily.

Hope this helps!

I took had a good look at the C4000 before I desided to go with the S404...

I will say it was the SmartMedia Vs Compact Flash that leaned me more over to the Minolta... Only thing I hate about the Minolta is you have to hold the shutter down in the bulb for the 15Sec..

Were the Olympus you set it to 16 Sec and just press the shutter and it holds it open for the full 16 Sec without me needing to hold the shutter button down.. But If I had to do it all over again I would of went with the C4000.
