Default Black and White Photos

I posted the same question in the Printers forum, but I thought that this one might get more traffic...

I'm looking to get a sub $200 printer. Probably a Canon S820 or i850. Will I be able to print quality black and white photos with either of these two printers, or can you recommend one that can?

Thanks in advance!!

Get an epson photo job. Even the fairly cheap ones work well. For really good B+W prints you'll need special black inks.

You can print B+W with colour and black inks but are usually lacking that really good tonal range and the blacks don't seem really black - if you know what I mean, more of a very dark purple.

Default special B&W inks.

there are several special inks for B&W.
I have been told that the best of them is
http://www.piezography.com/ which needs an epson printer. You should check that website as only some Epson printers seem supported. They also require a software investment of $150
As I got a great deal on a s820 I bought it before I heard of the epson inks. Instead I will try Lyson inks

Good luck

Try Wal*Mart/Costco printing for your black and white. I just had some done there and they came out very nice. Ther were mixed in with my color prints with no special notes or handling. YMMV

Unless you are going to print a huge number, that will be much cheaper than buying special printers and inks.

You can do both

Let CostCo, etc do any large quantity jobs.

You cant go wrong w/this printer for $99.

Also, this printer has a color cartridge and a black cartridge
so you will not waste a bunch of color ink doing b&W.

Thanks for all your help!
I think I'm going with the canon i850.
I'm not going to be printing B&W exclusively, and Steve made mention of it's decent B&W photo printing capabilities in his review.

Thanks again!
