Default I have to format the flashcard???

I was reading in another area about someone saying that you have to format the flashcard. I just purchased a Minolta dimage 7i (still waiting for it to arrive) and while waiting, I purchased a Sandisk Ultra 384 compact flash and the ImageMate as well. Do I have to format this thing only once....or everytime, and do I lose space after formatting it? Lots of questions........pls help.......thx

Format it in camera not hub. should not have to be done again. no space loss, enough room on it to shoot till your trigger finger hurts.

Default Thx....and one more thing........

Thx Gary......that was quick!
I guess there is a format "switch" on the camera........
One more thing........is there a reason why I must do it in the camera and not in the imagemate? Just curious.... : )

The cam knows just how it wants it, and your user manuel that comes with your cam will say to.

You will also want to format the card after you are sure that you have taken all the photos off the card. Its just like any other storage (floppy, hard drive, etc) If you don't format it (erase it clean) you are writing over existing info, and this can cause corruption of the new photos. I always copy the files to two different storage areas. 1 set to the hard drive, and a duplicate to a zip disk. After I have done that then I format the cf card in the camera, like Gary said the camera knows what it wants. Then later when I have enough photos I burn them to CD (duplicates). I hope this helps....
