Since going digital, I have been so informed using forums on the internet to make good choices. This one has been very helpful. I've purchased my camera, printer, scanner, and even Qimage by reading other peoples reviews and opinions. This one and dpreveiw are two of my favorites. Now that I have my new toys, I like to return the favor sometimes to others who may be trying to decide. I have one question, is there anyone else out there who can read the forum on dpreview but cannot post? I have tried over and over to enter the password they sent me, but it just won't let me past the the login page. There must not be anyone there because I have emailed them several times. I really would like to take part in the forums there, but just cannot. I must say that here at Steves digicams someone is always "home". If anyone has a suggestion, please let me know.

If that has been in the last few days, dpreview has been having some problems. Saw a note from Phil muttering something about "DDOS" and "script kiddies".

It won't accept webmail based email addresses anymore (hotmail etc). Whilst on the subject, I don't get on with dpreviews software for presenting posts, always having to click on the next post, rather than scroll as with Steve's. If you do a reply and the original post has embedded links, everything is copied to your reply unless you delete.

Perhaps its unfriendlyness is just me, as I don't use Fora a lot.

The set-up at DPR is hopeless especially for someone like me on dial-up.

I dislike the software dpreview uses for fourms as well. And for exactly the same reason. I prefer this package by a long shot. I put up with it over there because of the amazingly knowledgable people there. You want to know how good the Sigma 28-70 f2.8 EX lens is? You'll have a half dozen answers in a day. And at least one of them will be quite detailed.

You just have to put up with a bit of attitude & trolls at times. And lately the Canon people have been invading the Nikon SLR fourm for pissing matches ("The 10D is going to drive Nikon into Chapter 11!" stuff.) Way to many trolls recently.

But since I'm researching lenses, I've found no place which is better for users giving detailed lens info/reviews. Sure, opinions vary, but you get enough (most of the time) that you can see a broader opinion forming.

Ok, I've digressed enough.

Just to join in the fun, I have to disagree with the Hotmail policy...I only use Hotmail, I have no other email address. You can guess what I think about that policy.

I also don't care about their hands off policy...too many off-topic posts. I had to complain to Phil via email to get a post removed that was really abusive of the forum...I don't know how many pages I had to go to to find a contact link, and when I found the first one the message bounced back as undeliverable, so I had to search for another contact link. I checked in the forum later and the post was removed, but no comment by Phil saying "thanks" or anything like that...Steve is much better, putting up a sticky saying of a problem that happened even though most of us probably weren't on at that time of day and never knew it happened.

I never was a fan of Phil's forums, lots of info; actually too many messages to weed through, too much clicking, etc.

DPReview's forum just gets my blood pressure rising and boiling.

There are FAQs about trolls online http://world.std.com/~Infinity/right...lttrollFAQ.htm but the basic one we're talking about here is one who posts to cause arguments and flames. For instance posting in the Oly forum here that "Olympus cameras are garbage, you idiots should use ...... it's a much better brand!!!" They do this only to get the people in that forum angry and post reasons why Oly is not garbage, wasting time because that person is probably just sitting back laughing, or won't be back again; they just wanted to cause trouble, etc.

BTW, I'm an Oly user.

DPReviews has a defiinate inner circle but delivers nonsense with its good posts ,olyboy being the highlight of near mass hysteria.
Using the c2100 is almost a must for being in there.

Sometimes they can be pretty rude on Newbie questions. I learned something once that wasn't obvious, but was in the manual when I looked, the unfortunate poster got flamed for asking the question! What good does that sort of low level etiquette do for Newbie enthusiasm?
