Default 2 megapixels and 3x zoom or 3 megapixels and 2x zoom

If all things were equal,
Would you rather have a camera that is 2 megapixels with a 3x zoom or a camera that is 3 megapixels with a 2x zoom. I am in this predicament and am wondering which would be the better combination.

Peace....

Personally, I'd go with 3mp with 2x optical zoom. The difference between 2x and 3x zoom isn't all that much so that you'll find it making crucial differences in your shooting, whereas the 3mp gives you more flexibility when it comes to cropping and manipulating images.

This is just my opinion, mind you...

I want the one with a 20mm equiv at the wide end of the zoom - even though such a beast does not exist.

The answer depends on what you are going to do with the camera, what the cost difference is, how important that cost difference is to you, how large are you going to print, how fussy are you about large prints, .... And none of addresses the point that there are no two cameras differing only in their pixel count and zoom.

I didn't want to turn this thread into a camera battle but you dragged it out of me . I originally asked this question because I am stuck between picking up the Nikon 2100 or the Sony P52. The Sony is 280 with charger and batteries, the nikon is 250 without charger and batteries so they are about the same price. Which one would you pick?

Thanks,

Shiggy

If you don't want prints over 5x7, 2mp is fine.

I wanted to have the option to be able to print high quality 8x10's. Would the Nikon be able to do that?

In my opinion 8x10 is in the realm of 3mp.

You can get perfectly acceptable 8x10's with a 2MP camera, but nothing larger. You will have the ability to crop more with the 3MP camera, so it's a trade-off. All other things being equal, you should simply decide which is more important to you.
