Default Internet Explorer 6 update - Dont do it!

Well, folks...

I bit...and IE6 bit back.

After installing IE6 "update" for "security" on my Windows ME
Desktop, it has hosed my ability to access the forum. I can
access the Photo of the Day & reviews but not the forum!
Belatedly, I notice a complaint that after IE6 update other
folks had problems accessing other sites as well.

Yes, cache is cleared daily as are cookies.

I may have to dive into IE6 Internet options-Advanced-Settings
for a remedy. Trouble is, I am not board certified on them!
Ha, ha!

Netscape 4.76 does the same thing, btw.

Anybody else running into this?

Btw, forum is fine on my laptop w/win XP and my work PC w/Win NT SP6.

Okay, all you PC tech weenie gurus & digcam drivers...any suggestions? Any proven solutions?

Thanks much

what update are you refering to. i have updated all the machines i use full. win98se is just fine. all the xp machines are also ops check good. right now im accessing this through win98se yuk! AOL and using IE6.02.2800.1106IC (not the AOL explorer). the fact that it actually works using AOL as a portal is in itself a wonder of the universe.

I cannot give you the exact cite for the update but
the Microsoft Windows update page came up
when I booted up my dial up access so I update
to the "latest and greatest"! lol

It was early March when I did so.

i would say that there is more going on in your machine than meets the EI at this time. have you tried your restore feature and go back to before you did this update.

i have seen this even on mine but MS did rewrite the update and every thing was beautiful. it was the handling of some active x controls. the only thing that was affected on mine was quicktime and only those movies (sound but no video) off the web no0ne of my camera movies were affected. and that all works now. recheck your update on windows update feature.

I have a new 'puter at work with Explorer 6.0...no trouble in accessing the forum but I can't seem to get it to open a second window (as in going over to check out somebody's photo link)...it always closes the first window.

Others in our office don't have that problem and I can't find any options in the menu or help menu to change.

So far am not real impressed with Windows XP or with Explorer 6. :P

I'm on Win98 SE:

Explorer version 6.0.2800.106
Update SP1;Q810810847;Q313892

My logon auto fill works OK. I've got firewalls, Spider, Cookie jar and SpybotSD running on boot and don't have a prob.

My security option is set to Medium-High.

oh not to impressed with xp

how much ram do you have? and also do you have it set to use the same window or to open another when you go to another site. read your options and documentation with the OS. depending on how much ram you have you should be able to open at least 3-4 windows before it tends to slow down a bit and thats with 256MB of ram. with xp its more ram the better. it accesses memory as a flat file system. the limits of win95 98 Me are gone. you'll find that out as you start to work with larger images. 512MB is minimum for imaging. 1GB is a sweet spot for a full res 5MP tiff or raw image (about 9-15MB) to be manipulated with ease. win98 can't even access that. as far as not being impressed when set up correctly which is pretty easy and maintained by its owner properly it will run smooth and without any real issues for quite awhile. this OS is more versatile than any other of the windows series. most problems are self induced by the user due to the lack of reading about the product and its options.

but then again i shouln't complain for what i make reading it for them and doing simple fixes.

with XP a whole new graphics and imaging world has been opened that really couldn't be touched with a win based system before without ia little pain. this is where mac has lost its edge.

Someone asked about my system (desktop)

HP w/Win ME w/512 of ram w/Athlon 1G Hz chip.

So far, tweaks of IE6 have not enabled me to
get to forum from my desktop. I receive the
standard page cant be found window.

Also, the three boxes suggested to be checked (on the page not found window) via the Tools | Internet Options
| Advanced were already checked.

Yes, I did do a system restore about two weeks
prior...I may need to resort to that!

Any more ideas?

At this point I am tempted to reformat HD and install XP.

I'm running 98SE with about 600Mb RAM, Athlon 1Ghz and can certainly access the TIFF's my 602 can produce at 6Mpix (interpolated). (That's about 20Mb). I've also downloaded and opened higher res. images (90Mb) from the NASA site.

All this stuff about OS's is a red herring. I can get to this site from a Win95 BOX running Exp 6. Digicamfan - is your pc networked, do you have any Firewall software like ZoneAlarm or BlackIce?

Paste in this URL in the Explorer Address bar, what happens?

My son uses IE6, no problems. His problems really started with XP so beware. Went back to ME in the end.
