I make a loop in the strap and slip my hand through it,

I dont think I`ve ever had any camera around my neck, too awkward

I surely do agree. I either use a wrist strap or loop the existing neck strap around my hand for camera security. However I never have used a neck strap around my neck.

I don't understand - how can neck straps be useful ?

If you wear the camera via a neck strap - the camera seems to keep bouncing and hitting around when you are walking, and it feels weird .....

Wear the camera to your side, much as you would a purse, when walking along. Or, if taking snaps while on the move, you will be holding the camera anyway. The neck strap isn't so much for supporting the camera, as for keeping it from hitting the ground if your hand slips.

I find just a hand-strap to be best for me.

I feel like a Japanese tourist if I wear the camera around my neck. If I want to hold the camera at arms length then the strap is always dragging on the floor.

Also I am very conscious of people grabbing my camera. If I have just the hand strap then I have a better grip on it than anyone else might have have if they try to grab it.

ELDDJOC: Either wear the camera on the side, like your purse, as stated earlier...

Or, I just let the camera hang from my neck on the strap, and I kinda hold it against me with one hand...so, I guess when I am walking I am really paying attention to the camera, as it is too valuable to just ignore...part of the price of learning photography...

Despite my user name, I am a male...if your photo is correct, you are a female ELDDJOC, holding the camera against your chest will depend...uh, uh...on whther or not the camera will be "close" to you or not...I am stumbling here...

OK, let's put it this way...I would not recommend that Dolly Parton carry her camera the way I carry mine...OTOH, I WOULD recommend that methodto Paris Hilton...does you catch my drift???

My dad puts his neck strap on his shoulder with the camera lens pointing downwards. That seems to do the trick and appears less annoying actually

Yes they are bothersome. Times I may have 2 or 3 cams with me. Then they are all on neck straps. I also like to see how people act by the name on the neck strap. They treat you different if it says KODAK, CANON, or NIKON. You think I'm kidding?, try it at a sporting event.

Oh, BTW, I only use the shoulder strap/harness when I am caring my Panasonic FZ20 because it is larger. For ultracompacts, I use a wrist strap.

Enjoy life,

They only read whats on the strap. It is very easy to see and read. Try it yourself. You'll se thatpeople approch you different. They talk to you different. It's funny, but true.
